Unless the Bucs look pretty good pretty fast, I don’t think Raheem Morris will get a chance to coach Josh Freeman as the Bucs QB.

Madden was Gruden, Tomlin

John Madden announced his retirement at the age of 73. That’s a pretty old age for retirement, but is becoming more commonplace these days. Once upon a time John Madden was the youngest head coach in the NFL. He was the youngest to win the Super Bowl and one of the reasons he is the legend that he is today. He was the Jon Gruden or Mike Tomlin of the 1970′s. But he burned out on the sideline. He made his way up to the broadcast booth and the name Madden grew into its own brand thanks to EA Sports and its genius in making Madden the voice of its computer games of the NFL. He made football funny and entertaining as people lived and died with their teams wins and losses, but he was a football coach before he was an icon. A very successful football coachthat was able to get out of the extraordinary grind of pro football and enjoy it. I hope he is able to enjoy his retirement away from the microphone as well. Congratulations coach!

Bucs Survive Cutler Saga

As the days wore on I got more and more afraid that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were going to land Jay Cutler. I am so relieved today to find out that the Chicago Bears were much more desperate at the quarterback position than the Bucs. I’m terribly surprised that Bears’ General Manager Jerry Angelo would give away so much for a quarterback that hasn’t taken his team to a single playoff game or won a significant game yet. Two first round picks, a third rounder and their starting QB is one of the biggest gamles in NFL history, just below the Herschel Walker and Ricky Williams deals. The Buccaneers got their dream of a Super Bowl Championship dealing two firsts, two seconds and $8 M in cash for Jon Gruden, but in player deals, the Vikings and Saints certainly didn’t get what they had hoped for in their landmark transactions.
All I can say is I hope that is the last of the big threats to the starting QB position for the Buccaneers. I have been a Luke McCown fan for some time. His athleticism is nearly unmatched in the NFL at this time (as long as Michael Vick is not in the league) and he adds a very good arm. His detractors would say that his football savvy is in question at this point and I would agree. That is an area that he will have to prove himself through better decision making in critical areas of the field. But I believe the Bucs made the right decision not to go after a guy that got his feelings hurt after a coaching change. If he pulls more emotional hijinks in the “windy city”, be sure the fans of Chicago will blow him right out of there.
